Although it’s a game of counting and digits, there are some numbers in golf that remain elusive to most, but not Aaron King who won last Sunday’s ADT Electrical sponsored Wallace Cup with a magical score of 59 around the pristine Annesley Links at Royal County Down.
To break 60 in golf is a move into rarefied space, only a handful of seasoned professionals have managed such a feat let alone amateur players. For King it was a day to remember and the perfect way to get the new season under way at Mourne Golf Club.
The Annesley Links can be a treacherous course to navigate despite being a much shorter test than it’s more illustrious neighbour, the Championship Links at RCD. King steered a steady course of pars and bogeys over the front nine until an untimely nine at the ninth would have surely tested the mettle.
Credit to the winner for he remained composed to rattle off four consecutive pars from the 10th. Three bogeys and timely birdie at the par 17th set up an impressive inward half of two-over 35 for the 21 handicapper.
And when all was said and done, King carded an impressive stroke score of 80 for a winning net score of 59. That was good enough to win by three strokes from Darryl Northrop in second, who carded a fine gross 70 with birdies at eight, 10 and 17 for a net 62. Jon Crawford was third with a net 64. The left hander fired out of the blocks to turn in three under with birdies at the first, fifth and eighth before dropping several shots on the way home.
Crawford equalled the best gross of the day 68 alongside Peter Murphy.
Mourne’s opening qualifying event of the season took place on the Annesley Links as the Royal County Down Ladies Scratch Salver took place over the Championship Links last Sunday.
Thank you to last week’s sponsor ADT Electrical and all the local company’s sponsoring upcoming events at Mourne Golf Club

CRAWFORD HONOURED BY MOURNE GOLF CLUB
At last week’s Annual General Meeting in Mourne Golf Club, there was a special presentation to one of the club stalwarts Noel Crawford, who was afforded Honorary Membership after he represented the Ireland Senior team in recent seasons. Crawford has long been one of the best players in Mourne and last week the club recognised his efforts, not only representing Ireland but also Mourne Golf Club. Crawford was presented with his official Ireland blazer by the incoming Mourne Golf Club Captain Paul Mullan.
